Thank you, Clyde.  I decided to cover the screen to allow the bees to stay warmer.

There are two excellent articles in the February ABJ on the subject of ventilation.  While there will always be mixed options on the value of providing extra ventilation these articles suggest it is not helpful.

I am a new to beekeeping and have read tons of recommendations regarding bees and hives.  But little I have read is directed for our weather here.  I am concerned about keeping hives cool in the summer and warm in the winter as our climate varies so drastically.  Are screen bottoms recommended here and 1” auger holes drilled near the handholds to allow air to circulate?  But then what in winter?

What else should I know before my first bees arrive?
